What this tool does
BMI compares weight to the square of height and gives a single number used for population-level screening. It does not distinguish muscle from fat and does not account for age, build or body composition, so treat it as a rough reference only.
How to use it
- Choose metric or imperial units.
- Enter your height and weight.
- Read the BMI value and its category.

Frequently asked questions
- What do the categories mean?
- The usual adult ranges are below 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or above obesity.
- Is BMI reliable?
- It is a screening indicator, not a diagnosis. Athletes and older adults in particular can get misleading values. Ask a health professional for advice.
