What this tool does
The calculator divides the area to cover by the area of one tile to get the exact tile count, then adds your waste percentage and rounds up, since tiles are bought whole and cuts always waste some material. The result is the number of tiles to purchase, not the number that will end up laid.

Frequently asked questions
- What waste percentage should I use?
- 10% is a common default for a simple rectangular room. Complex layouts, diagonal patterns or a room with many corners often need 15% or more.
- Do tile length and width need to match the area's unit?
- Yes, use the same length unit for the tile dimensions as whatever unit the area was measured in, for example meters and square meters, or feet and square feet.
- Does this include grout lines?
- No, grout lines are thin enough that most projects ignore them in this calculation; the waste percentage already covers the resulting small discrepancy.
