What this tool does
Counting syllables by ear is slow and error-prone for anything longer than a line, especially when checking a poem's meter or a haiku's 5-7-5 pattern. This tool applies a vowel-group heuristic to every word in your text, the same approach used by common English readability formulas, to estimate each word's syllable count, then totals them and highlights the words with the most syllables. It's an estimate rather than a dictionary lookup, so unusual or foreign words may be off by one.
How to use it
- Paste or type your text in the box.
- Read the total syllables and the average per word.
- Check the list of longest words by syllable count.
Privacy
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your input is never uploaded, stored or shared — closing the tab removes it.
Frequently asked questions
- How accurate is the syllable count?
- It's a vowel-group estimate rather than a dictionary lookup, so it's accurate for the great majority of everyday English words but can be off by one on unusual spellings, abbreviations or foreign words.
- Can I use this to check a haiku's 5-7-5 pattern?
- Yes. Paste each line separately, or paste all three lines and use the per-word breakdown to check the syllable count of each line by eye.
- Is my text sent anywhere?
- No. It's analyzed locally in your browser.
