Add or remove VAT using your own tax rate

Add or remove VAT with a custom rate. Calculate net price, VAT amount and gross price locally in your browser without uploading values.

These buttons are shortcuts, not a rate table for any country. VAT rates differ by country, by product and over time — check the rate that applies to you.

Net: 100.00
VAT: 20.00
Gross: 120.00

The two formulas

  • Adding: gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100).
  • Removing: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). The VAT inside a tax-included price is not gross × rate.

Arithmetic on the rate you type, worked out on this device. It is not tax advice and carries no country rate tables.

Everything on this page is processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

What this tool does

Enter a price and the rate you want to apply, and this splits it into net, VAT and gross either way round. Adding VAT is the easy direction. Removing it is the one people get wrong by hand: the VAT inside a tax-inclusive price is not the gross times the rate, it is gross − gross ÷ (1 + rate), which is why £120 at 20% contains £20 of VAT rather than £24. The rate is always yours to enter. This page ships no country rate tables, deliberately — VAT rates vary by country, by product category and over time, and a stale built-in table is worse than no table because it looks authoritative.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether you are adding VAT to a net price or removing it from a gross one.
  2. Enter the amount and the VAT rate that applies to you.
  3. Read the net, VAT and gross figures, and copy the breakdown if you need it.

Privacy

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your input is never uploaded, stored or shared — closing the tab removes it.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include official country VAT rates?
No, on purpose. Rates differ by country and product and change over time, so the tool asks you for the rate rather than shipping a table that would quietly go out of date. Check the current rate with your own tax authority.
How do I remove VAT from a gross price?
Divide by 1 + rate. At 20%, a gross of 120 gives a net of 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100, so the VAT is 20 — not 120 × 0.2 = 24, which is the usual mistake.
What is the difference between net and gross?
Net is the price before VAT, gross is the price the customer pays with VAT included, and the VAT amount is the difference between them.
Are prices uploaded?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and no value is transmitted or stored.
Is this tax advice?
No. It only calculates amounts from the rate you provide. Which rate applies, and what you must file, are questions for your tax authority or accountant.
