What this tool does
Kilometers per liter and both miles-per-gallon units scale linearly with distance travelled per unit of fuel, but liters per 100 km is a rate of fuel used per fixed distance — its reciprocal — so this converter inverts through km/L rather than applying a single ratio. Everything still runs as plain arithmetic in your browser.

Frequently asked questions
- Why doesn't a lower L/100km match a lower MPG?
- L/100km measures fuel used per fixed distance, so a lower number means better economy, while MPG measures distance per unit of fuel, so a higher number means better economy — they move in opposite directions.
- Are US and imperial gallons the same?
- No. A US gallon is 3.785411784 liters while an imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters, so the same car gets a higher MPG figure in imperial gallons than in US gallons.
