What this tool does
Different platforms count differently, so this tool shows characters, characters excluding whitespace, and the UTF-8 byte length that databases and APIs usually enforce. Emoji and accented letters are counted as single characters but may take several bytes.
How to use it
- Paste the text you want to measure.
- Compare the character and byte counts.
- Check the limit rows for titles, descriptions and posts.
Privacy
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your input is never uploaded, stored or shared — closing the tab removes it.
Frequently asked questions
- Why are bytes higher than characters?
- UTF-8 stores common Latin letters in one byte, but accents, CJK characters and emoji need two to four bytes each.
- What length should a meta description be?
- Around 150 to 160 characters is the usual guidance before search engines start truncating it.
