What this tool does
This character counter measures pasted or typed text in the browser. It counts Unicode code points, so accented letters and CJK characters count as one code point, while a multi-code-point emoji or flag sequence can count as more than one character. It also removes every whitespace character and counts the remaining characters, then reports the UTF-8 byte length of the text. The page compares the character count against three fixed references: 60 characters for a title tag, 160 for a meta description and 280 for a social post. Counts update as you type, and the input can be cleared. It does not provide custom limits, remaining-character countdowns, over-limit warnings, platform-specific social rules, SERP pixel-width previews, grapheme-cluster counting, word, sentence, paragraph, line or reading-time stats, per-line breakdowns, character frequency tables, copy buttons, file upload or download. Text stays in the browser and is not uploaded to LocalTools.

Frequently asked questions
- Does this count spaces?
- Yes. The main character count includes spaces, tabs and line breaks. A separate count removes every whitespace character first.
- What is the difference between characters and bytes?
- Characters are counted as Unicode code points. UTF-8 bytes measure encoded size, so non-ASCII text can use more bytes than characters.
- Is my text sent to a server?
- No. Counting happens in the browser, and LocalTools does not upload, receive or store the text.
- Can emoji count as one character?
- Not always. LocalTools counts code points, not grapheme clusters, so some emoji sequences count as multiple characters.
- Can I set a custom limit?
- No. The page only shows fixed references for title tags, meta descriptions and social posts, without custom limits or countdowns.
